An annotated checklist ofCulicoidesLatreille, 1809 (Insecta: Ceratopogonidae: Diptera) with incorporation of a vector species list from India

Abstract: Culicoides Latreille, 1809 (Insecta : Diptera : Ceratopogonidae) are small nematocerous biological vectors of a wide range of pathogens of veterinary and medical importance. They are distributed worldwide but prefer warm, damp, and muddy areas. Female midges require blood for egg maturation. Studies on taxonomy, proper identification keys, and distribution patterns of these flies across different geographical regions of India of these flies are limited. This article provides an updated checklist of Culicoides … Show more

“…Among 1343 Diptera Section, Zoological Survey of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change, M-Block, New Alipore, Kolkata-700 053, West Bengal, India. Culicoides species all over the world, 73 species are found in India 57 of them from West Bengal, 30 Culicoides vectors reported worldwide, 13 of them are reported from India, of which 11 are found in West Bengal (Mukhopadhyay et al 2016). Inspite of these reports, studies on vector-borne disease transmission by Culicoides in West Bengal are fragmentary.…”

“…There are more than 1,000 species of Culicoides worldwide [13], 27 of which have been reported from India [14,15]. An abundance of vectors and the differential feeding preferences of vectors can determine the risk of Culicoidesborne diseases [16].…”
