“…Based on searches of herbarium records (http://bryophyteportal.org/portal/) and state checklists (Brinda et al. ), one species that emerged from the soil bank, Riccia cavernosa , was not previously known within at least 250 km of the study area. Propagule contaminants were not detected in sterile controls during the germination assays.…”

“…The ability of bryophyte soil banks to sustain regional species pools is demonstrated by the occurrence in soil of Riccia cavernosa , a liverwort for which the nearest previous report was ~250 km distant (at the western fringes of the Mojave Desert in California) and which had previously been reported from the state of Nevada only once (Brinda et al. ). The presence of cryptic species suggests that soil banks act as diversity reservoirs with hidden contributions to regional species pools.…”

“…Several living collections were sought through MO (Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, Missouri, USA); however, all of these proved to be older collections and would not revive in culture. Two localities for the species are known from the state of Nevada (Brinda et al, 2007), and one of these populations was used in the current study, vouchered as follows: Stark s.n ., 30 Nov 2004 (UNLV), resampled May 2011, USA, Nevada, Clark County, River Mountains, 6.4 km northeast of downtown Henderson, 36°04’N, 114°55’W, Township 22S, Range 63E, Section 2, 638 m a.s.l. (site vegetation described in Stark, 2005).…”

“…The most recent published checklist of Nevada bryophytes listed 310 taxa (Brinda et al 2007). Other species new to science occurring in Nevada have subsequently been published (Greven 2010;Medina et al 2011;Spence and Shevock 2012).…”

“…Field collecting and inventory efforts continue to document new taxa for the Nevada bryoflora (Shevock et al 2005;Spence et al 2006). Many of the species reported herein have been reviewed, examined, or determined by persons involved in the bryophyte volumes of the Flora of North America Project (FNA 2007(FNA , 2014 (Brinda et al 2007). This species is likely to remain a very rare species in Nevada although it is widespread in fens in the Californian portion of the Sierra Nevada.…”
