Abstract. This paper shows that understanding collaborative design goes beyond analyzing group dynamics, tasks' repartitions or negotiation during decision-making processes. During the preliminary phases of design, the intentions of a designer are mainly supported by its sketches and more particularly by specific graphic units inside those sketches. Inside a controlled setting, twelve professional designers are asked to express, share, capture or interpret sketches. A qualitative and quantitative fine-grained analysis of strokes teach us• how designers tend to deal with representations that are not theirs, as in an ecological collaborative situation;• what main graphical key-features constitute the crucial essence of the shared information;• how and when is this graphic essence ready to be shared with collaborators.

Design reviews are typically used for three types of design activities: (1) identifying errors, (2) assessing the impact of the errors, and (3) suggesting solutions for the errors. This experimental study focuses on understanding the second issue as it relates to the number of errors considered, the existence of controls, and the level of domain familiarity of the assessor. A set of design failures and associated controls developed for a completed industry sponsored project is used as the experimental design problem. Nondomain generalists (students from an undergraduate psychology class), domain generalists (first year engineering students), and domain specialists (graduate mechanical engineering students) are provided a set of failure modes and asked to provide their own opinion or confidence on whether the system would still successfully achieve the stated objectives. The confidence level for all domain populations decreased significantly as the number of design errors increased (largest p-value = 0.0793), and this decrease in confidence is more significant as the number of design errors increases. The impact on confidence is lower when solutions (controls) are provided to prevent the errors (largest p-value = 0.0334) as the confidence decreased faster for domain general engineers as compared to domain specialists (p = < 0.0001). The domain specialists showed higher confidence in making decisions than domain generalists and nondomain generalists as the design errors increase.

RESUMECet article traite de la passation graphique d'une intention et révèle, par l'intermédiaire d'expérimentations ciblées, quels composants graphiques soutiennent particulièrement bien ou mal cette passation. Les résultats suggèrent d'apporter une attention toute particulière, que l'on soit concepteur--collaborateur ou développeur d'interfaces de soutien à la collaboration distante, aux courbes dites « principales ». Celles--ci semblent effectivement être garantes d'une intention graphique potentiellement mieux transmise et mieux capturée -l'essence graphique d'une collaboration distante efficace. ABSTRACTThis paper deals with the graphical transfer of an intention and underlines, through several controlled experiments, which graphical components are better adapted to support this transfer. Results suggest that one should pay particular attention to « principal curves », being either collaborating designer or software engineer in charge of designing new--generation interfaces to support distant collaboration. Those principal curves indeed seem to insure better transmission (and better capture) of graphical intentions -the fundamental graphic essence of an efficient distant collaboration.
