An Approach for 3D Visualization of Pipelines

Abstract: Utility networks (pipelines and cables) are usually modelled by lines and nodes. The systems used for maintenance of utilities are typically twodimensional, allowing for creating vertical profiles in limited key places. Since the position is visualized on 2D maps, it is rather difficult to distinguish between cables and pipelines with the same x,y coordinates. Such visualization might be misunderstood by both field workers (maintaining the utilities) and specialists. Therefore the interest in 3D visualization … Show more

“…It is used to capture and represent the shape and graphical appearance of city models including object semantics, thematic properties, taxonomies and aggregations (Kolbe 2009). On BIM and GIS/CIM integration research, there have been some previous works on transforming CityGML to IFC and vice versa (Du and Zlatanova 2006;Hijazi et al 2009;Isikdag and Zlatanova 2009). A more recent work on the extension of CityGML, called GeoBIM, which incorporates IFC data into GIS and is implemented in open source BIMserver, was carried out by de Laat and van Berlo (2011).…”

“…There is a lot of work already done in transforming IFC to CityGML and vice versa [14,18,25]. This previous work has a strong focus on converting geometry.…”

“…Similarly, the map distance in 2D is inaccurate because it is significantly different from the real distance in 3D that is measured linearly along the pipe axis (Pubellier, 2003). Consequently, the information contained in 2D maps is often misinterpreted particularly when made available to third parties like unskilled labourers, or non-professionals (AbdulRahman et al, 2006).Such misinterpretations have led to severe accidents which consist of blind-cutting off of water, gas, heat supply and so on (Du, 2006). Other equally serious accidents such as the cut-off of communication lines and even the overflow of sewage had been caused by blind-cutting or fault damaging.…”
