The development of Interoperability is a necessity for organisations to achieve business goals and capture new market opportunities. Indeed, interoperability allows enterprises to exchange information and use it to seize their shared goals. Therefore, it should be verified and continuously improved. This is the main objective of the Interoperability Assessment (INAS). Indeed, such an assessment aims at determining the strengths and weakness of an enterprise in terms of interoperability. Many surveys and reviews have been proposed in the literature to analyse the existing INAS approaches. However, the majority of these reviews are focusing on specific properties rather than a general view of an INAS. Therefore, this paper proposes a systematic literature review of INAS approaches. The objectives are to identify the relevant INAS approaches and to compare them based on a holistic view based on their similar and different properties (e.g. type of assessment, the used measurement mechanism, and the addressed interoperability barriers). A bibliometric analysis of the selected INAS approaches is also conducted with a discussion of their advantages and limitations.

The dynamic formation of a consortium, combining the most adequate set of competencies and resources to satisfy the needs of each new situation sounds indeed as a very appealing approach. However, reaching a rapid ‘alignment' among a diverse group of heterogeneous entities is not simple and may require a considerable time to achieve. In this collaborative context, the integration of industrial partners depends strongly on the ability to use a collaborative model to interact efficiently. In this paper, the authors propose a model to tackle this point according to the fact that the partners of the collaboration may change. They propose the development of an approach to achieve a dynamic inter-company collaboration. In this cooperation mode, many companies share their resources, data services and processes. These companies have their own mechanisms and applications, which are heterogeneous. First, the authors define a framework to establish this kind of collaboration. The purpose of this solution is to keep the company architecture and to ask the mediator for playing an intermediary role between companies. Then, the authors propose a service selection mechanism based on the agent technology and on the decision tree paradigm. They present an offline composition service process. Finally, they illustrate their solution with an example of treating an emergency case to show the feasibility of the proposed model.

This article focuses on the interoperability feature seen as a specific requirement. Indeed, any complex system (e.g. a train, an organisation or an IT system) need to interact with other systems, thereby forming a heterogeneous environment. All these systems are not necessarily designed to function properly and efficiently with one another, whether from a conceptual, technical, behavioural or organizational standpoint. This paper highlights what seems to be relevant in terms of conceptual definitions and modelling framework whenever a (group) of engineer(s) intends to design what we call here a "natively interoperable system" or, at least, a system maximizing its interoperability capabilities. To proceed, as a first prerequisite, a definition of the concept of interoperability is here proposed for complex system engineering. The second prerequisite consists of establishing the needs of a design team assigned to design such "natively interoperable system". An interface pattern model with sufficient generic, formal and pragmatic qualities is then proposed and illustrated briefly.
