An approach for placement and sizing of capacitor banks in distribution networks with distributed wind generation

Abstract: SUMMARY In this paper, a modified simulated annealing technique is proposed for the simultaneous improvement of power quality and optimal placement and the sizing of fixed capacitor banks in a modern distribution network. The latter is supplying a mix of linear and nonlinear loads imposing voltage and current harmonics. Besides, the network includes integrated variable‐speed wind turbines as distributed generation. The stochastic power output of the wind generation is considered by performing the Monte Carlo s… Show more

“…Jwo et al [19] presented a hybrid simulated annealing/genetic algorithm (HSAGA) method to reduce the CPU time of SA while retaining its main characteristics, i.e., the ability to get the near-global optimal solution in a finite time. A modified simulated annealing (MSA) technique has been developed for simultaneous improvement of power quality and optimal placement and sizing of fixed capacitor banks in a modern distribution network [20]. The later supplies a mix of linear and nonlinear loads and imposes voltage and current harmonics.…”

“…Currently, superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) have attracted considerable attention because of the unique advantages caused by HTS materials, and their applications can offer different kinds of contributions, such as increasing system reliability, enabling cost-efficient grid expansion and integration of distributed generation sources [2][3][4][5][6]. On the other side, from the point of view of suppressing overcurrent, using a SFCL can not only take effect on limiting the short-circuit current during the first rise, but also play a promising role in restricting the surge current.…”

“…On the other hand, the presence of capacitor banks in distribution networks can reduce its fundamental losses; but in some cases, the resonance situation can occur in the series or parallel configuration of capacitor banks with network impedances . The resonance in the power network can greatly increase the level of harmonic distortion . This would affect the distortion level of the harmonics in the network.…”

In References , the harmonic resonance between the network and the wind turbine has been investigated, and some methods have been proposed to reduce this resonance. In Reference , the effect of linear loads is evaluated on harmonic emission in distribution network.…”
