An Approximate Estimation of Total Materials Requirement of Metals

Abstract: Ore TMRs, which are the total amount of overburden and rock to obtain metal ore, were estimated as a fundamental data to estimate the value of TMR(Total Materials Requirement) of metals. Ore TMR of coal, iron, copper, zinc and tin are estimated 12.5, 5.1, 304, 34 and 95 representatively by statistic method based on hearing and investigation of practical mining sites. An approximation from the quality of crude ore and further approximation from the concentration of the metal in the crust were also proposed as… Show more

“…It is found from the figure that the any inputs at the in-use stage of EHA are not accounted for. In order to compare the estimated UO-TMR with reported NO-TMR 9,10) on the same footing, any treatments of urban tailings such as detoxifying treatment are regarded as out of the boundary.…”

“…For the comparison, the reported NO-TMR by Halada et al 9,10) were used for gold, silver, copper, iron and aluminum, and the average value of Nakajima's data 13) for several plastics was used for NO-TMR of plastics. On the other hand, since there is no TMR data for stainless steel and die-casting aluminum, they are estimated from the data of ''Material Intensity (MIT)'', 30) which is estimated based on the similar concept to TMR.…”

“…"Materials intensity per service" is the numerical inverse of resource productivity. Life cycle input of resources per the aim and the function of a product system such as TMR (Total Materials Requirement) 16) is to be reduced in the life cycle. The lightening of vehicles while maintaining the safety level is a typical case.…”
