An Aqueous-Ethanol Extract ofLiriope spicatavar.proliferaAmeliorates Diabetic Nephropathy through Suppression of Renal Inflammation

Abstract: The tuberous root of Liriope spicata var. prolifera (TRLS; Liliaceae family) is valued for the ability to promote glucose homeostasis, and it may therefore be utilized as an adjuvant therapy in the control of diabetic complications. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of an aqueous ethanol extract from TRLS (TRLS-ext) (100 or 200 mg kg−1 per day for eight weeks) on rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy (DN). Renal dysfunction in diabetic rats was ameliorated by TRLS-ext as e… Show more

“…The changes in markers of diabetic nephropathy in our study were consistent with previous report. [17][18][19] We also demonstrated in our study that administration of combination of rutin and quercetin could influence these parameters in the diabetic nephropathy rats. Streptozotocin administration to rats increased plasma glucose and decreased insulin levels.…”

“…The right kidney of the animals in all groups were identified, resected, dried by tissue papers and weighed by digital scale on Sartorius balance to determine the change in the weight of organs with respect to their body weights. A change in kidney size was estimated by division the weight of the right kidney to total body weight [ 1 ]. The kidney was removed from each rat, put into 10% formalin and embedded in paraffin.…”

“…Moreover, they also exerted anti-diabetic effects on insulin-resistant diabetic KKAy mice through up-regulating the expression of insulin-receptor (InsR), insulin-receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, and PPAR γ ( Liu et al, 2013 ). The anti-diabetic activity of aqueous-ethanol extract of L. spicata was observed through inhibiting the expression of ICAM-1, MCP-1, and fibronectin protein and inflammatory cytokines ( Lu et al, 2013 ).…”
