An assessment of government measures in combatting COVID-19 using ISM and DEMATEL modelling

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate the interplay of various measures used by different governments around the world in combatting COVID-19.Design/methodology/approachThe research uses the interpretative structural modelling (ISM) for assessing the powerful measures amongst the recognized ones, whereas to establish the cause-and-effect relations amongst the variables, the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method is used. Both approaches utilized in the study aid in the compr… Show more

“…For its novelty and singularity, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought considerable challenges to the most diverse management areas (Kamel and Mousa, 2021; Priya et al , 2021; Alam et al , 2021), including the supply chains (Ivanov, 2020a; Queiroz et al , 2020a; Sarkis, 2020; Kamel and Mousa, 2021). Thus, it has provoked severe disruptions to the traditional supply chains by affecting the flow of manufacturing and distribution, creating severe shortages in several network nodes (Haren and Simchi-Levi, 2020; Ivanov and Das, 2020).…”

“…Further, DEMATEL analysis is integrated with ISM to classify barriers in cause and effect groups. Many previous researches have integrated ISM and DEMATEL approaches (Priya et al , 2021; Shen et al , 2014; Hou and Xiao, 2015). The findings obtained from a combined approach of ISM and DEMATEL analysis revealed that for successful elimination of TB, underinvestment must be considered on priority basis followed by poor implementation of government policies and programs, poverty, poor primary health care infrastructure, less diagnosis at primary level, unregulated private healthcare, inequity to access and unawareness for TB infection, respectively.…”

“…In contrast, in TISM, the interpretive logic knowledge base matrix is prepared to provide logic for each linkage. TISM approach identifies the structural relationship between the variables [42][43][44][45], and DEMATEL further provides the strength of those relationships, along with providing the cause and effect relationship among the variables [46][47][48]. Further, in this section, the methodology for TISM and DEMATEL approaches are discussed.…”
