Nowadays it is very common to discuss the various aspects of lighting within a framework of energy efficiency. In addition, the questions concerning lighting quality and occupants' comfort are another topic for active studies and debates.In the current investigation we tested one aspect of lighting quality-that is, light modeling-with the help of a luminance mapping technique. Here the degree of a 3D object's shape and detail distinctness are associated with modeling quality; that is, directly related to the light modeling concept. The aim of the study was to comprehend whether luminance-based design as a method, most perception oriented among others, could be applicable for the evaluation and prediction of the visibility of the shape and details of real 3D objects observed by people under daylight conditions and, further, to suggest luminance-based measures that can be developed into indicators of shape and details distinctness. Ordinal regression analysis of the survey results paired with several measures based on luminance values was performed. The tested measures were luminance ratio, mean luminance of the object, standard deviation of the luminances of the object, and the ratio between the highest luminance value of the object and mean luminance of the object. Among all of these measures the first three have the strongest correlations with subjective perception of 3D objects' shape and detail distinctness.KEYWORDS high dynamic range images, luminance-based measurements, luminance maps, light modeling, shape and detail distinctness Received

Chip-On-Board Light-Emitting Diodes (COB LED) are increasingly more common. Their development in recent years has directly contributed to increasing the power of LED sources, whilst simultaneously increasing the luminous flux from the entire COB. Consequently, it has led to new developments in some applications. Information regarding the size of the light source luminous surface and luminance distribution on its surface is critical for a designer whilst designing optical systems. The purpose of this conducted research was to establish to what extent luminance distribution is even on the examined COB LEDs. In order to verify luminance distributions on an LED surface, direct measurements with a matrix luminance measuring device were made. As a result of the research, it has been observed that luminance distribution is not even, and in many cases luminance maximum does not fall in the geometric center of the luminous surface, which was initially expected. So, it has been concluded that while designing optical systems for COB LEDs, irregular luminance distribution on their surface needs to be considered.

This paper reports the results of measurements performed in a test room to test how digital camera can be used as luminance meter and thus to investigate the lighting control scheme based on the inputs coming from camera. An indoor lighting control scheme which adapts according to the daylight availability is presented in this work. The camera calibration procedure based on High Dynamic Range Imaging technique is used to obtain the camera response function which allows to relate pixel values obtained from the image and the photopic luminance values. Luminance gradient evaluation for the uniformity analysis is discussed for the test room.
