An assessment of the angling fishery for yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus australis (Günther), in Moreton Bay, Australia

Abstract: Yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus austrah, support an important angling fishery in Moreton Bay, a large estuarine system on the east coast of Australia. An analysis of the records of catches by anglers indicates that abundance and mean size of yellowfin bream have changed little in Moreton Bay during the period 1945 to 1980. Over the past 5 years substantial increases have occurred in the total angling effort for yellowfin bream at surf bar spawning areas in Moreton Bay. This has resulted in a decrease in mean ca… Show more

“…We were unable to source records directly from local fishing clubs for this study, but previous studies have evaluated catch rate trends in wider southeast Queensland from fishing club data. Pollock and Williams [ 13 , 32 ] assessed fishing club data over 35 years (1945–1980) for surf fisheries in Moreton Bay, approximately 80 km south of our study area. These data were of sufficient resolution to depict seasonal trends, as well as species-specific trends in catch rate.…”

“…Given the increasing pressures on tropical estuarine fisheries (Hatcher et a/., 1989) and the abundance of this species, it seems inevitable that A. herda will be targeted by commercial fishers at some time in the future. A congeneric sparid A. australis (Owen), that is already an important recreational angling species in temperate Australia (Pollock & Williams, 1983), has been recognized as a Protandrous hermaphrodite (Pollock, 1985). As yet, the reproductive pattern of A. berda has not been established.…”

“…In addition non-migratory fish continue to feed during the early spawning period, whereas migratory fish do not feed in the spawning areas. It is interesting that spawning yellowfin bream at surf-bars in Moreton Bay are the subject of large angling fisheries (Pollock and Williams, 1983). These fish are capable of feeding because they are captured in large numbers on baited lines by anglers.…”
