An assessment of the efficiency of Spanish schools: evaluating the influence of the geographical, managerial, and socioeconomic features

Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to explore the efficiency of Spanish schools while simultaneously considering data envelopment analysis (DEA) and multivariate analysis. Test scores from the Program for International Assessment reports are used as outputs while the resources of each institution are considered as inputs to the analysis. The methodology utilized determines the DEA efficiencies under various input/output combinations and the results are interpreted through the application of factor analysis and pr… Show more

“…On the one hand, based on the correlation between socioeconomic development with the level of human capital, there is a clear incentive to increase investment in education. On the other hand, the prevailing economic crisis and widespread public deficit in almost all countries necessitate optimal outcomes through judicious utilisation of funds (Segovia-Gonzalez et al, 2020, p. 1845.…”

“…DEA identifies relative efficiencies among many DMUs. DEA has been applied in various industries for measuring and benchmarking the performance of companies and entities (Segovia‐Gonzalez et al., 2020; Tao et al., 2021).…”

“…Data envelopment analysis (DEA), proposed by Charnes et al. (1978) and first used to evaluate efficiency (Dyckhoff and Allen, 2001; Moreno and Lozano, 2018; Ang et al., 2019; Georgantzinos and Giannikos, 2019; Ruiz et al., 2020; Segovia‐Gonzalez et al., 2020), introduces a new methodology to this problem. DEA provides an estimated production possibility set (PPS) to consider practical production plans under several assumptions.…”
