An Assumed Vertical Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 During Pregnancy: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract: The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has affected persons of all ages, including the newborns. Few published case reports and case series have described the possibility of vertical transmission of COVID-19. In the present report, we describe a young primigravida at 33 weeks of gestation, who presented with a four-day history of low-grade fever, malaise, and breathing difficulty. She underwent testing of nasopharyngeal sw… Show more

“…To correctly diagnose COVID-19 in a child, apart from obtaining a nasopharyngeal smear, chest imaging and rectal swab can be performed [75]. In the case report, Mohakund et al [76] confirmed COVID-19 infection in a newborn based on a sample collected at 12 h of life. The newborn required resuscitation and mechanical ventilation, but no changes were found on the chest X-ray.…”

“…The newborn required resuscitation and mechanical ventilation, but no changes were found on the chest X-ray. Before delivery, COVID-19 infection was also confirmed in the mother of the baby [76]. Moreover, in the case of intrauterine viral transmission from mother to child, attention should be paid to the level of IgM for SARS-CoV-2 and the cytokine IL-6 in the serum of newborns [77].…”

“…Although the virus has been found to have multiple routes of transmission, limited data exist on whether the vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can occur from asymptomatic infected mothers to their newborns during pregnancy. Recent systematic reviews and case reports have not yet definitively verified the rate of vertical transmission during pregnancy [ 1 - 4 ]. We report a full-term newborn with positive SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) 24 hours after delivery by an asymptomatic COVID-19 positive pregnant mother.…”
