An asymptomatic huge primary retroperitoneal pseudocyst: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Background Retroperitoneal non-pancreatic or idiopathic pseudocysts are very rare lesions. This case report aimed to present our patient and to check all the available literature on this kind of rare disease. Case presentation Our patient was a 67-year-old Iranian man admitted with mild abdominal discomfort for three months. Ultrasonography and CT scan revealed a huge cystic structure within the retroperitoneal space. The lesion was excised through… Show more

“…If diagnostic uncertainty were not an issue, nonpancreatic pseudocysts could be treated similarly to pancreatic pseudocysts, which would likely yield satisfactory results due to their histopathological similarities. Choosing options other than total surgical excision can avoid the need for extensive resection of adjacent organs such as the bowel, bladder, or parenchyma [ 12 , 13 ].…”

“…The solid group consists of the tumor itself, and the cystic group consists of the cyst wall and contents such as fluid, pus, and blood. Pseudocysts in the retroperitoneal space are caused by the absence of an epithelial lining within the retroperitoneal space that accumulates unabsorbed fluid [ 1 ]. CT or magnetic resonance imaging are valuable tools for investigating retroperitoneal masses; however, it is challenging to make a definite diagnosis including various benign tumors [ 10 ].…”
