“…High-risk studies have reported an increased incidence of neurobehavioral problems in children of schizophrenic parents during late childhood and adolescence when compared to children of mentally healthy parents and children whose parents have other mental disorders, such as depression (Cornblatt and Obuchowski 1997). These neurobehavioral problems include subtle deficits in information processing and attentional functioning (Asarnow et al 1977;Cornblatt et al 1999;Nuechterlein 1985), as well as motor-coordination problems (Erlenmeyer-Kimling et al 2000;Hans et al 1999;Marcus et al 1993;Marcus et al 1985;McNeil and Cantor-Graae 2000). Although most highrisk samples have not been followed through the age of likely onset of schizophrenia, some evidence suggests that neurobehavioral signs during childhood and adolescence may be predictive of the development of schizophrenia (Mirsky et al 1995) and related psychosis (Erlenmeyer-Kimling et al 2000).…”

“…Well-known studies of adopted-away offspring of schizophrenic parents (Heston, 1966;Rosenthal et al, 1968) are not included because, starting with adult subjects, they have yielded retrospective, rather than prospective, information about early indicators. The very small sample of fostered-away chidren studied at younger ages by Asarnow, MacCrimmon, Cleghorn, and Steffy (1978) is included, however.…”

“…Abnormalities in unaffected relatives are assumed not to be secondary to the effects of having the disorder, but reflect an unexpressed liability to develop schizophrenia. This strategy has been used to identify neurocognitive indices of vulnerability to schizophrenia that are suspected to be under partial genetic control (Asarnow et al, 1977Erlenmeyer-Kimling, 2000;Faraone et al, 1995;Nuechterlein et al, 1998).…”
