An atypical case of lymphosarcoma (sporadic bovine leukosis) in a heifer

Abstract: An 18-month-old Friesian heifer had several unusual, raised, black, cutaneous plaques, some of which were up to 20 cm in diameter, on its head and neck, limbs, thorax and perineum. There was also generalised lymphadenopathy. A clinical diagnosis of lymphosarcoma (sporadic bovine leukosis) was derived from a fine needle aspiration of a skin lesion. Post mortem and histological examinations confirmed a multicentric lymphosarcoma with widespread infiltration into many of the tissues recognised as predilection sit… Show more

“…3 Although not investigated immunophenotypically, a similar case that had neoplastic lesions in the skin, trachea and urinary bladder has been recorded in an 18-month-old heifer. 5 Based on the distribution of epitheliotropic lesions, the neoplasm described here was thought to come under the same category as the previously reported cases, and to be a distinct clinicopathological form of bovine lymphoma. In spite of the lack of reports, 3,6 bovine neoplasms of γδ T lymphocyte origin are Scientific intraepithelial lymphocytes.…”

“…Spontaneous regression and subsequent relapse one to two years later, with internal organs affected, has been recorded. Fine-needle aspirates from the skin lesions can aid in diagnosis (Dalgleish et al, 1991).…”

“…Thymic lymphosarcoma is generally sporadic, however, there is one report of a familial form in Holstein calves (Parodi and others 1989). Other reports of bovine lymphosarcoma have involved the mandible (Hamir and others 1989), trachea and right main stem bronchus (Dalgleish and others 1991).…”
