Within a clinic, blood testing is routine in most diabetes centres, but often causes patient delays. This is now discouraged under the terms of the Outpatient's Charter, which states that patients should be seen within 30 minutes of appointment time. Regular assessment of long‐term glycaemic control by assay of serum fructosamine or glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) is part of what patients with diabetes should expect (the Diabetic's Charter), with the HbA1c assay being preferred. We have developed a rapid within‐clinic HbA1c service which allows fulfilment of the Patient's and Diabetic's Charter.
