Given the high importance of attendance for university students, upon which the possibility of keeping or losing their places in the course is based, it is essential to replace the inefficient manual method of attendance recording with a more efficient one. To handle this problem, technology must be introduced into this process. This paper aims to propose an automatic attendance system based on passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), fog, and cloud computing technologies (AASCF). The system has three sides. The first one, which is the Client-side; works on collecting the attendance data then sending a copy from it. The second side, which is the Server-side, works on calculating an absence ratio of all the students during the course. The third side is the Fog-server. Data sent by the client-side reaches to the Fog-server which, in turn, sends data to the cloud at the end of the of working time at the university. This paper also reviews the state-of-the-art automatic attendance systems and shows the merits and demerits for each approach by providing a checklist comparison. Unlike the previous works, the proposed system protects data from wasting and ensures its arrival to the cloud even in cases of connection losing or device crashing, which is the contribution of this paper.

Recently, there have been many attempts to develop offline classrooms to enhance educational efficiency. One of these attempts is the introduction of IT systems in colleges to replace existing attendance management systems. Existing systems authenticate students’ lecture attendance by simply using login data, but this has inherent issues involving substitute attendance and not being able to identify whether students are really present in the lecture room. To solve these problems, we have implemented a Smart Attendance System using Bluetooth, which is supported by most smartphones. This system consists of a student’s smartphone app, a lecture room terminal (referred to as Raspberry Pi hereafter), and a management web page. This Smart Attendance System is used to manage attendance and related academic administration by using Bluetooth, HTTP, and RESTful (web services that follows the representational state transfer) technologies.

An automated identification and control system has been developed to optimize the entry of students to the University dining room at the National University of San Agustin. The system of attendance and authentication is scalable, reliable and secure. The prototype consists of a master microcontroller with 2 slaves of RFID readers for a 13.56MHz frequency and works with two photoelectric proximity sensors, four actuators of pulse width modulation controlled servo motors (PWM) with a period of 20ms and a tape RGB smart led signaling. The purpose is to automate the entry of students so that long queues do not form while reporting on the attendance of students. Then, the proposal is to use a PWM control algorithm, which will run on the Atmega2560 master microcontroller, which is linked to a server. The database on the server verifies the identity and status of the student through a Java Netbeans graphical interface. The system is optimized to receive a rapid response and to function without line of sight of the tags.
