An autoradiographic study of the efferent connections of the preoptic region in the rat

Abstract: The normal morphology of the rat preoptic region has been briefly described on the basis of Nissl- and silver-stained preparations and its efferent connections have been studied autoradiographically in over 50 rat brains with single small injections of 3H-proline, or various mixtures of 3H-proline, 3H-leucine, and 3H-lysine. Injections in the anteroventral part of the lateral preoptic area labeled fibers projecting through, and perhaps to, the anterior and lateral hypothalamic areas and ending in the supramamm… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the few previous pathway-tracing studies (Swanson, 1976;Conrad and Pfaff, 1976) are consistent with the present data, and a recent study indicating participation of the MPO in social defensive responses (Motta et al, 2009) is also consistent with a connectionindicated involvement of the LHAjd in the same. The conspicuous absence of definitive studies of the MPO and internuclear area reflects an issue that has, until recently, also applied to the LHA, namely, the absence of a definitive (at least provisionally) parcellation scheme.…”

“…4T-Y). In contrast to extensive investigations of the medial preoptic nucleus (MPN), only a few studies (and none recent) have provided a (partial) overview of the connections of the MPN-surrounding MPO (Swanson, 1976;Conrad and Pfaff, 1976), and none has specifically addressed MPO function.Nevertheless, the few previous pathway-tracing studies (Swanson, 1976;Conrad and Pfaff, 1976) are consistent with the present data, and a recent study indicating participation of the MPO in social defensive responses (Motta et al, 2009) is also consistent with a connectionindicated involvement of the LHAjd in the same. “…However, in consideration of the evidence that labeled areas are anatomically related to the limbic system (NAUTA and HAYMAKER, 1969;SWANSON, 1976), the present results suggest that this pathway may influence visual stimuli upon the limbic system.…”

“…In mammals, fibers from some olfactory forebrain areas were reported to travel in the SM, without sending collaterals to the HG (Herkenham and Nauta 1977). It was also reported that fibers from the substantia innominata projected to its own contralateral counterpart via the HC (Price and Powell 1970;Swanson 1976). …”
