An easy to produce and economical three‐dimensional brain phantom for stereotactic computed tomographic‐guided brain biopsy training in the dog*

Abstract: This 3D phantom replicates anatomical, CT, and tactile features of brain tissues and tumors and can be used to develop the technical skills required to perform SBB.

“…Furthermore, the biopsy procedure is easy to perform, and it requires only 2 people. The surgeon does not need intensive training, like that needed for other biopsy systems, before using this stereotactic device . However, the construction of the biopsy frame itself based on the MR images should be performed by a specifically trained person.…”

“…Kopf's equipment is only approved for use in research tests [5] and not clinical use which may affect the precision standards it is held to. Though the time required to perform a biopsy may be affected by instrument adaptations, it can also be in luenced by user experience [18,19]. Squires et al [16] only took 19 minutes to complete the biopsy.…”

“…Only histopathological exams can identify the nature of the lesion seen in image studies [2]. Brain tissue biopsies are delicate procedures and different methods have been proposed: free-hand [6][7][8][9], ultrasound-guided [10] and, more recently, with the aid of stereotactic [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] and neuronavigational devices [20][21][22].…”

“…Although most surgical models have been aimed at veterinary students, a few (besides the minimally invasive surgical models) have been designed with the resident or clinician in mind. One such model was the agarose and cheese canine skull model described by Sidhu et al to teach veterinarians how to perform stereotastic computed tomography‐guided brain biopsies 74 . Another model directed at veterinarians was the feline urogenital model described by Phillips et al to teach microvascular suturing 42 …”
