Creating an environment capable of responding to its users and organizations in real‐time is a challenging task. However, with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, a new perspective about creating an intelligent and interconnected world has become a reality. The goal of the present study aims to explore the relationship between IoT and Knowledge Management (KM) when generating a Smart environment. Herein, we conducted a Systematic Literature Review and present a discussion about the evolution of the IoT concept and the IoT ecosystem. More specifically we focused on the main IoT elements that serve as the foundation of the IoT ecosystem and the relationship between the IoT and KM. Although there is a lack of studies about KM supporting the IoT, our study provides evidence that the IoT is composed of a set of technologies that enable KM and KM processes can facilitate the development of IoT Smart environments. Thus, there is an opportunity to study how to generate more intelligence and connectivity, which will support the players of the ecosystem, promote interactions among objects and people and ultimately add value to organizations and users.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to design a framework for asset data management in power companies. The authors consider asset data management from a strategic perspective, linking operational-level data with corporate strategy and taking into account the organizational context and stakeholder expectations.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a multiple case study based on a literature review and three series of in-depth interviews with experts from three Russian electric power companies.FindingsThe main challenge in asset data management for electric power companies is the increasing amount and complexity of asset data, which is frequently incomplete or inaccurately collected, hard to translate to managerial language, focused primarily on the operational level. Such fragmented approach negatively affects strategic decision-making. The proposed framework introduces a holistic approach, provides context and accountability for decision-making and attributes data flows, roles and responsibilities to different management levels.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of our study lie in the exploratory nature of case study research and limited generalization of the observed cases. However, the authors used multiple sources of evidence to ensure validity and generalization of the results. This article is a first step toward further understanding of the issues of transformation in power companies and other asset intensive businesses.Originality/valueThe novelty of the framework lies in the scope, focus and detailed treatment of asset data management in electric power companies.

Within any ecosystem, information sharing is essential. In this paper, the Swedish gravel road ecosystem is studied, where information plays a crucial role for the effective management of operations and maintenance. However, efficient information sharing is not enabled due to the lack of appropriate information systems. For addressing this issue, this paper intends to elicit information needs of gravel road stakeholders to support the design of a cloud-based information system. The main purpose is to explore the information needs of stakeholders within the Swedish gravel road ecosystem. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 11 participants representing key stakeholders in the ecosystem. Template analysis was used for analyzing the interview results. The major findings were a set of information needs covering road identification and condition, weather conditions, accessibility and traffic, maintenance policy, and sensor data. The results form a comprehensive information model for the further development of a cloud-based gravel road management system that would contribute to increased traffic safety and comfort, lower maintenance and management costs, and better decision-making abilities.
