An Effective Charge Neutralization Enabled by Graphene Overlayer in Ambient Pressure XPS Measurements of Insulators

Abstract: Ambient pressure XPS is a powerful technique capable of performing measurements with samples kept at mbar pressure. The filled gas, also X‐ray ionized, provides electrons to neutralize positive charges built up on insulating samples. However, this convenient neutralization scheme does not solve the charging problem completely. In this study, the effectiveness of how the electrons generated from conducting mechanical parts mounted in the immediate front of insulating samples neutralize positive charges on the s… Show more

“…The variation in the correlation function is clearly reduced at lower incident beam intensities. A standard method to reduce surface charging is to coat the surface with a thin conductive layer such as carbon (Suzuki et al, 2020;Yang et al, 2021). To experimentally test whether static charging of the sample surface by the X-ray beam could play a role, we prepared a different sample having a thin ($ 1 nm) carbon film evaporated onto the surface, spanning the two electrodes, as shown in Fig.…”

“…The membrane with deposited Pt catalyst was placed beneath the graphene in the water, and the liquid surface was then lowered such that the membrane's surface became covered by the graphene. [21] The graphene-capped sample was held in a dry box for the removal of moisture prior to the experiments.…”
