An efficient fast mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC intra/inter predictions

Abstract: H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard, which outperforms the former standards in video coding efficiency in terms of improved video quality and decreased bitrate. Variable block size based mode decision (MD) with rate distortion optimization (RDO) is one of the most impressive new techniques employed in H.264/AVC. However, the improvement on performance is achieved at the expense of significantly increased computational complexity, which is a key challenge for real-time applications. An efficient fast … Show more

“…The proposed algorithm is applicable not only for the sequences with low-speed motion and steady background but also for those with fast and complicated motion like "mobile" and "stefan". Table 4 and Table 3 give the performance comparisons with recent works in [4] and [7]. Table 3 demonstrates that the proposed algorithm outperforms Zhan's method [4] in of sequences with fast motion.…”

“…Table 4 and Table 3 give the performance comparisons with recent works in [4] and [7]. Table 3 demonstrates that the proposed algorithm outperforms Zhan's method [4] in of sequences with fast motion. The fuzzy logic based mode decision algorithm in [7] is faster than the proposed one, whereas with less than 10% time reduction superior, the degradation of 0.4dB is too much.…”

“…Several fast mode selection algorithms have been developed in [3]- [8]. Zhan [4] proposed a fast algorithm by exploiting the correlation between macroblocks, however, for the sequences with fast motion like "mobile" and "stefan", this algorithm doesn't improve much in terms of encoding efficiency. Fast frame selection algorithms are introduced in [9]- [11].…”
