“…In boar seminal plasma, cationic proteins are reported to be the major constituent (Boursnell et al, 1962). These basic proteins increase the membrane permeability (Hibbitt and Benians, 1971).…”

“…The majority of the protein components in the seminal plasma of the boar are secreted by the seminal vesicles (Boursnell, Johnson & Zamora, 1962). Three principal components are involved, two of which, A and H, are positively charged and have isoelectric points of 8-8 and 9-4, respectively (Boursnell & Briggs, 1969).…”

“…In most of the early studies of the biochemical characteristics of seminal plasma, attention was focussed mainly on the relative contributions of the different areas of the male reproductive tract. For example, boar seminal plasma proteins are predominantly basic and originate mainly from the seminal vesicles (2,3,5,17). By their strong binding capacity to the plasma membrane (HIBBITT and BENIANS, ll), these basic proteins increase the permeability of the sperm plasma membrane, cause severe loss of enzymes from the spermatozoa (MOORE et al, 23) and thus render the spermatozoa susceptible to cold shock (23).…”
