An embedding technique to determine ττ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data

Abstract: An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model ττ backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed μμ events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way, a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. … Show more

“…In effect, this procedure generates GeMM-predicted trends for gambled time that are based on all 20 features of the MDV DNN : although the GeMM only explicitly takes as input distractor and target ages, the GeMM-simulated trials inherit the 20 MDV DNN inputs from the data trial they are based on, thereby preserving the covariance structure of the data (i.e., they are embedded in the data, as for hybrid data-simulation models in collider physics). 46 The GeMM accurately predicts memory confidence behavior We observed a striking match between GeMM predictions and observed behavior. Because all the assumptions of statistical decision confidence also apply to our memory confidence task, we could quantitatively assess the relationship of behavioral confidence reports and GeMM-derived confidence levels by focusing on the established set of comparisons to evaluate confidence as a decision variable.…”

“…For all events in which the decay of a Z or two W bosons results in two genuine tau leptons, the τ-embedding method, as described in ref. [46], is used. For this purpose, µµ events are selected in data.…”

“…Inclusive Measurement The measurement by the CMS collaboration of the H→τ τ process [22] selects events based on the number of electrons, muons and hadronically decaying τ candidates which are required to have opposite charge. Major backgrounds arise from Z→τ τ [23]. Improvements with respect to previous measurements from CMS [24,25] mostly result from an improved DNN based τ identification algorithm and a finer event categorization.…”
