An Empirical Evaluation of Technical Drawing Didactic in Virtual Worlds

Abstract: Abstract-This work proposes a 3D Virtual World environment and a didactic experience for training young students in an environment capable of supporting the engineering practices based on technical drawing. The main difficulty of technical drawing consists in representing a 3D object on a 2D medium. This restriction imposes to human mind to be able to summarize the spatial properties of objects on the paper. The proposed system trains these capabilities by requiring students to build, in the simulated environm… Show more

“…The social dimension is a key factor for learning and for this reason the adoption of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) to support learning has been widely investigated. As an example, De Lucia et al (2009b) experiment a Second Life setting for supporting synchronous direct instruction, while in Murad, Passero, Francese and Tortora (2011) and in De Lucia, Francese, Passero and Tortora (2009a, 2008a, 2008b Second Life has been adopted to conduct virtual lab experiences and collaborative activities, respectively.…”

“…2021, 11, 5634 2 of 15 the use of ICT has proven to be effective in improving the spatial ability of science and engineering students through different technological solutions, such as augmented reality [14], non-immersive virtual reality [15][16][17], web-based learning tools [18], PDF-3D [19], etc. Likewise, TD teaching has also benefited from the use of new technologies, as evidenced by the existence of several works in which different solutions based on the use of ICT were shown to support the teaching-learning process of this discipline [3,7,14,18,[20][21][22][23].…”
