An empirical investigation of implementing Lean Six Sigma in Higher Education Institutions

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the applicability and implementation of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). LSS is considered as the most recent service quality practice which has proved its success in manufacturing and service sectors. Though there is plenty of literature available with regard to the application and benefits of LSS in services sectors (like Banking, healthcare, information technology sectors, etc.), there is apparently no evidence in t… Show more

“…In both QM and OM, the dominant ways of approaching IT are either as a context for research or as a technology that is a crucial part of modern organisations, among many other fields. In regard to IT as a context for research, studies have been conducted on organisations such as IT companies (Singh & Soltani, 2010), IT institutes (Khoong & Ku, 1994), IT industries (Huang et al, 2018), IT projects (de Carvalho, 2013), IT departments (Hunt et al, 2005), offices of information technology (Lawson & Manortey, 2010), IT service organisations (Gijo et al, 2019), IT centres (Badri et al, 2005), and IT sectors (Vijaya & Mahalingam, 2018). As can be concluded from the above, QM research has been conducted in a wide variety of IT organisations and continuously over the years.…”

“…HEIs point out that measurements play an important role in assuring performance (Montgomery, 2007;Widrick et al, 2010). To easily meet accreditation standards, many HEIs around the world have started implementing Lean Six Sigma (LSS), which refers to the integration of two reputed improvement methods: Lean and Six Sigma (Haerizadeh & Sunder, 2019;Sunder, 2016b;Sunder & Antony, 2018;Sunder & Mahalingam, 2018). The demand for information about the quality of HEIs is met through processes such as accreditation where HEIs provide evidence of quality.…”

“…The extent to which generality can be claimed from a single case study is limited, but by documenting case experiences in the light of existing literature, each case adds to the sum of knowledge available for future practitioners and researchers (Sunder and Antony, 2015). The case study methodology is chosen over other research methodologies due to the following reasons (Merriam, 2009;Sunder and Mahalingam, 2018). First, research methods like 'case study' offer flexibility in design through mixed methods (both qualitative and quantitative) and application which are more sensitive to the complexities of organizational phenomena, and hence becomes relevant for studying Six Sigma implementations (Krueger et al, 2014).…”
