Abstract:Purpose
This paper aims to assess the contributions of maintenance practices and extract various significant factors that influence the implementation of maintenance practices in northern Indian small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) business performance.
Design/methodology/approach
In the current study, 216 north Indian SMEs have been extensively surveyed to assess the contributions of different maintenance practices implementation dimensions and manufacturing performance attributes through different st… Show more
“…The findings indicate that poor maintenance culture has impacted negatively on the full utilization of residential properties in the study area. Simranjit et al (2022) carried out an empirical investigation to assess the contributions of maintenance practices and extract various significant factors that influence the implementation of maintenance practices in Northern Indian Small and Medium-Sized enterprises (SME) business. Survey design was adopted.…”

Maintenance culture refers to the act of regularly or promptly carrying out intermittent checks and repairs on assets or infrastructures to allow the facility to be sustained over a considerable period. Hence, the broad objective of this study was to investigate how maintenance culture affects socioeconomic development in Enugu state. The study adopted the descriptive research design and survey method for data collection. The population of the study was 278. The study adopted census study because the population is manageable. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Hypotheses were tested using t-test. The result revealed that the nature of maintenance culture significantly affects positively the life span of facilities, and is highly impeded by corruption, poor patriotism; poor budgetary allocation for maintenance etc. That maintenance culture has a significant positive effect on quality of lives and sustainable development, ensuring optimum functioning of public facilities, fostering sustainable socioeconomic development, and creating a conducive environment for residents and businesses. And that government maintenance policies and programmes do significantly affect positively maintenance culture in Enugu state as it plays a pivotal role in shaping proactive maintenance culture. The study, therefore, recommends that; Enugu state government should invest in training and empowering maintenance personnel through building technical skills to enhance their ability to independently and effectively contribute to infrastructure upkeep; shun corrupt practices; and increase maintenance budgetary allocation; both government and ministries should promote community/public involvement in maintenance initiatives by encouraging citizens to take ownership of public space to foster a collective responsibility and thereby contributing to sustained infrastructural optimum performance and sustainable development; and that Enugu State, should fortify maintenance policies, ensuring clarity, enforcement strategies, and public awareness with a clear guideline to instil a sense of responsibility, fostering a proactive maintenance culture among the residents and government in the state.

The rapid growth of Industry 4.0 and predictive methods fostered a great potential for state-of-the-art techniques in the industrial sector, especially in smart factories. The equipment failure or system breakdowns during run time of a factory creates a severe problems towards impoverishment of the production system and destitution of the business. Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is a cost-saving and data driven technique to predict the maintenance time of in-service equipment or systems to reduce breakdown time and increase productivity. Although PdM is pragmatically adopted in large-scale industries, there is a lack of studies that map the PdM adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this systematic mapping study (SMS), we focus on predictive maintenance from an SME perspective to explore the field for researchers, scientists, and developers to comprehend the potential of PdM systems, their challenges, distinctive characteristics, and best practices in SMEs. Our study is based on four research questions comprised of demographic data, key challenges, distinctive characteristics, and best practices of predictive maintenance in SMEs. We found that the current literature on PdM is deficient in the SME domain, especially the financial side is vague. There is a huge potential for PdM in SMEs to design cost models and focus on data availability impediments. Management and monitoring of PdM and skilled personnel are also inadequate. Thus, we present a study that extracts the knowledge from the existing literature about PdM in SMEs, finds the research gap, and can assist in identifying the barriers and challenges of PdM adoption in SMEs.
“…Application of machine learning and rough set theory in lean maintenance decision support system development spotlight as a strategic function for manufacturing companies [54,58,78,79].…”
Lean maintenance concept is crucial to increase the reliability and availability of maintenance equipment in the manufacturing companies. Due the elimination of losses in maintenance processes this concept reduce the number of unplanned downtime and unexpected failures, simultaneously influence a company’s operational and economic performance. Despite the widespread use of lean maintenance, there is no structured approach to support the choice of methods and tools used for the maintenance function improvement. Therefore, in this paper by using machine learning methods and rough set theory a new approach was proposed. This approach supports the decision makers in the selection of methods and tools for the effective implementation of Lean Maintenance.
