An empirical study of the variability in the composition of British freight trains

Abstract: As part of the broader sustainability and economic efficiency agenda, European transport policy places considerable emphasis on improving rail's competitiveness to increase its share of the freight market. Much attention is devoted to infrastructure characteristics which determine the number of freight trains which can operate and influence the operating characteristics of these trains. However, little attention has been devoted to the composition of the freight trains themselves, with scant published data rel… Show more

“…Woodburn [39] investigated variability in number of wagons in a freight train of particular category or origin-destination pair. His survey was based on a sample of almost 3,000 individual freight trains, with analysis at four levels of disaggregation, from the commodity groupings used in official statistics down to individual services.…”

“…The study explores the paradigm of connecting hinterland through port based multimodal logistics deployment via published research work s as part of the literature and identify associative affairs detailing integration with a view so as to recognize the procedure prior to integration [35]. For the achievement of the objective to ensure hinterland connectivity, it is important to analyze the aspect of "what gets transported by roads", which is contributing to the high transportation cost as compared to other modes of transport [3].…”

“…The fact that severe, disruptive weather events are likely to become more frequent, and that it is impractical to prevent all instances of major network disruption from occurring, adds urgency to the implementation of recommendations to increase resilience and minimise the implications for rail freight and associated supply chain activity. Using an approach adopted in previous research (see Woodburn, 2015), train composition information for additional trains was gathered from reliable online sources n = 134 (16% of freight trains diverted during the period of the line closure)…”
