An Empirical Test and Calibration of HiiRegion Diagnostics

Abstract: We present spectrophotometry in the 3600-9700Å region for a sample of 39 H II regions in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds, for which independent information is available on the spectral types and effective temperatures of the ionizing stars. The spectra have been used to evaluate nebular diagnostics of stellar temperature, metal abundance, and ionization parameter, and compare the observed behavior of the line indices with predictions of nebular photoionization models. We observe a strong degeneracy between fo… Show more

“…The position of an object in the BPT diagram is a function of metallicity and the ionization state of the emitting gas (e.g, Kennicutt et al 2000) and can be roughly divided into three regions (following Kauffmann et al 2003a). The lower left region contains emission line galaxies dominated by star-formation.…”

“…In general, diagnostic diagrams using a range of emission-line intensities are useful for differentiating resolved emission sources such as PN from Hii regions, SNRs and other objects (e.g. Sabbadin, Minello & Bianchini 1977;Cantó 1981;Fesen, Blair & Kirshner 1985;Riera, Phillips & Mampaso 1990;Phillips & Guzman 1998;Kennicutt et al 2000;Riesgo-Tirado & López 2002;Riesgo & López 2006;Kniazev, Pustilnik & Zucker 2008;Raga et al 2008). However, the situation becomes more complex when compact or pseudo-stellar PN are considered.…”

“…The emission line ratios considered have different sensitivities to the input parameters. (Pagel et al 1979;Kennicutt et al 2000;Dors & Copetti 2003;Morisset et al 2004 (Henry & Howard 1995).…”
