An Energy Efficiency Estimation Procedure for Small Wind Turbines at Chosen Locations in Poland

Abstract: Contrary to the extensive amount of research on large wind turbines, substantial analyses of small wind turbines are still rare. In the present study, the wind energy potential of three locations in Poland is analyzed using real wind data from a five-year period and the parameters of the selected turbine model. Appropriate simulations are performed to assess the energy efficiency of the analyzed investments at a coastal, foothill, or lowland site. According to the results, the most favorable location for a sma… Show more

“…For example, for solar power plants in the US, the indicators fluctuate within 10-12 years [68] and 16-22 years in the United Kingdom [69]. In the meantime, the average payback period of small wind power plants in the US is 15 years [70], and, in Poland, when they are located in areas with the best wind speed, it is 13 years [71]. In our opinion, Ukraine should be guided by world experience, ensuring, by economic incentives, a payback period of RE plants of different installed capacities of 10-13 years.…”

“…The cost of energy (COE) was also calculated for each considered case. COE is a metric used to assess the costs of electricity generation [19]. For one year of turbine operation, the formula for COE is as follows:…”

“…Individual consumers are also increasingly investing in SWTs to partially meet their household needs for electricity or hot water. The growing interest in the construction of private wind farms may reflect a greater awareness of the negative effects of imminent climate changes and greenhouse gas emissions [7,8]. This is why research on small wind turbines is becoming increasingly important.…”

“…In the study, the actual wind data from the monitoring of four turbines with different locations and models were used. Turbine performance is influenced by environmental and technological factors, for example, local wind conditions, wind speed, turbulent wind gusts, Betz limit and Tip-Speed Ratio [7,46]. In this study, Markov models were implemented as one of the most popular tools for estimating readiness and reliability.…”
