An energy‐efficient protocol for multimedia streaming in a mobile environment

Abstract: Pervasive services and smart environments are becoming more and more popular as an ever-increasing number of people enjoys these services typically by means of portable devices. These devices are battery-fed and, thus, energy efficiency is a critical factor for the deployment of pervasive services. In this paper we focus on multimedia streaming services for mobile users. Specifically, we consider a scenario where mobile users with Wi-Fi devices access the Internet to receive audio files from a remote streaming… Show more

“…Energy issues in mobile environment have been studied in many papers investigating the consumption characteristics of wireless interfaces [5] [6]. According to the published results, one of the most energy consuming components in mobile devices is the wireless interface since networking activities cause up to 50% of the total energy consumption in hand-held devices and up to 10% in laptops.…”

“…In part II we proposed cross-layer power-saving approach [5] operates between the Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the remote display protocol layer. Part III provides another technique through Energy efficient multimedia streaming protocol [6]. This protocol implements an energy management policy whose main goal is to minimize the energy consumed by the WNIC at the mobile host, while guaranteeing the real-time constraints of the streaming application.…”

“…Li and Wang develop NonStop [10] which is a set of middleware-based run-time algorithms with partition prediction and service replication for continuous media streaming in mobile and ad hoc networks. Anastasi et al look further into the problem of energy efficiency when providing streaming media services to mobile clients [1]. Xue et al explore group mobility to predict the future availability of wireless links for increasing total streaming capacity with P2P streaming [15].…”
