An Epidemic Among Swedish Children Caused by Adenovirus Type 3

Abstract: Summary An epidemic of “pharyngoconjunctival fever” which occurred in the middle of Sweden in the summer of 1955 is described. A correlation to infections with adenovirus type 3 was found. This type of virus was thus isolated from the stools of 23 out of 25 patients with “typical” symptoms and in addition also from the stools of three apparently healthy family contacts. The titer of fecal virus was high and some cases excreted the virus in their stools for at least two months. Virus was recovered from the sewa… Show more

“…There are many reports concerning the predominant growth of adenoviruses in the intestines of apparently healthy humans [3,5,7,10,14,16] and in human cases with enteric disorder [4,6,15]. Even in respiratory diseases with or without enteric symptoms, virus isolation appears to be more favorable from fecal specimens rather than from throat swabs [11,19,21,22]. It is interesting to assume that since our strain K87 has a tissue tropism analogous to many human adenoviruses, information concerning the infectious process and immune mechanisms in human adenovirus infections might be best obtained by studying an analogous experimental model, the strain K87-mouse system.…”

“…The virus has been isolated from a water sample collected near a sewage outlet in a fresh water lake, where an epidemic occurred. 4 In the laboratory, adenovirus type 3 has been found to be as susceptible to chlorination as E scherichia Coli bacteria. 1° 'rhe present communication describes an explosive outbreak of pharyngoconjunctival fever in children having swim practice in the early morning, when the chlorinator was shut off.…”

“…In some of these ECHO viruses were found more often in infants with diarrhoea than in controls. Similarly, culture of adenoviruses has also been reported both from the U.S.A. and Europe (Kjellen, Zetterberg & Svedmyr, 1957;Moffet et al, 1968). Some workers, however, consider that adenoviruses and enteroviruses are unlikely to be significant causes of uncomplicated diarrhoeal disease (Bell & Grist, 1967).…”
