An Epidemiologic Perspective on Scaphoid Fracture Treatment and Frequency of Nonunion Surgery in the USA

Abstract: Our estimated incidence of scaphoid fracture is higher than previously reported. The increased enthusiasm in the USA to surgically treat scaphoid fractures is reflected by our trend analysis. The frequency of surgical treatment for presumed nonunion after initial surgical management for closed scaphoid fractures exceeded 10%. Given the increased utilization of surgery, surgeons and patients should be aware of the frequency of nonunion treatment to inform treatment decisions.

“…Scaphoid fractures account for 60-70% of carpal fractures, with an incidence of 10.6 per 100,000 person-years in the US [50]. Unfortunately, greater than 10% of these fractures progress to non-union [50], which must be treated with bone autografts.…”

Unfortunately, greater than 10% of these fractures progress to non-union [50], which must be treated with bone autografts. Due to the intricate structure and patient-specific shape of the scaphoid bone, 3D printing has been proposed as a clinical tool for the treatment of these fractures and for use in pre-operative planning [51], reconstructive microsurgery [52], and the printing of patient-specific ceramic implants [53].…”
