An epidemiologic study of the fungal skin flora among the elderly in Alexandria

Abstract: SUMMARYThe fungal skin flora of a sample of 205 elderly persons in Alexandria, drawn by cluster sampling probability technique, was investigated. Pathogenic yeasts were isolated from 18-6% and 10-3% of skin and nails respectively. Candida albicans (16-1 % and 7-3 %) was prominent. A low prevalence of dermatophytes grown on agar (2-4 % from skin and 2-9 % from nails) was observed. In contrast, saprophytic filamentous fungi comprised 45-4 and 50 7 % of skin and nails samples respectively. This study showed no st… Show more

“…Dermatophytosis is a frequent childhood disease, and the fungal species involved varies according to age and clinical presentation. 61 Tinea capitis is the primary clinical presentation of dermatophytosis in African children, as shown in many studies throughout the entire African continent, including West Africa, 13,[15][16][17][20][21][22]25,37,38,40,42,43 North Africa, 30,61,62,[68][69][70][71]77 East Africa, 32,33,84,86,88 Central Africa, 7,90,91 and southern Africa. 100,101,105 Many publications reported a high prevalence of dermatophytosis in West and North African children.…”

“…In contrast to studies concerning children, which were primarily conducted on populations of schoolchildren, the epidemiology of dermatophytosis among adults focused on patients of any age attending various healthcare facilities (such as university hospitals, dermatology departments, microbiology departments, dermatology clinics at medical center, or army hospitals) and in inmates. Adult-based studies concerned cases in West Africa, 12,22,23,28,34,36,38,40,45,55,57,58 North Africa, 35,[48][49][50][51][52]61,[63][64][65][69][70][71][72][75][76][77]79,106 Central Africa, 29,92 East Africa, 32,102 and southern African countries. 103,104 Some reports, regarding patients cared for in various healthcare facilities in West Africa, highlighted a higher prevalence of dermatophytosis in adults than in children.…”

“…This is significantly higher than seen in healthy individuals as seen in some studies which show rates as low at 2-3%. 11 The most prevalent dermatophytic infection was tinea cruris with it being 44% of all dermatophytic infections. This was followed closely by tinea corporis consisting of 37% of the dermatophytic infections.…”

“…Today the percent of opportunistic fungal infections is increasing, so when considering the role of skin as a reservoir from which infection of a susceptible host can occur, determining the fungal microbiome specially Candida is important [3]. Two of the most factors influencing the complex of inhabitants on the skin are gender [4] and age [5,6].…”
