An Epidemiologic Study on Hosts and Pathogens of Urinary Tract Infection in Urban Children of Korea (2012–2017)

Abstract: Purpose: We aimed to determine characteristics of host, causative organisms, and antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria in pediatric patients with UTI living in metropolitan area of Korea. Methods: Retrospective investigation was done for the causative organisms of UTI in 683 pediatric cases treated at Ajou University Hospital from 2012 to 2017. Patients were classified into Escherichia coli and nonE. coli group, where E. coli group was subdivided into ESBL(+) and ESBL(-) groups based on whether the bacteria co… Show more

“…However, the antibiotic susceptibility pattern for UTIs across different geographic locations is slightly different. In Asia, studies of children with confirmed UTIs reported an ampicillin resistance rate of 66% to 82%, whereas TMP-SMX resistance was 50% to 62% [31,36,4042]. In the United States, most samples collected from children with suspected/confirmed UTI were sensitive to a first-generation cephalosporin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, and nitrofurantoin [43,44].…”

“…UTIs are among the most common causes of acute illness in childhood [ 7 , 8 ]. More than 1 million children with UTIs visit clinicians annually in the United States, and approximately 50,000 children with UTIs are admitted per year, with inpatient costs > US$180 million [ 9 , 10 ].…”
