“…In European countries enuresis has been reported to occur in 9-19% of children at 5 years old, in 7-22% at 7 years and in 5-13% at 10 years [1]. A similar value has been reported in children in eastern countries [2]. In Italy a multicentre epidemiological survey, which recruited 9086 schoolchildren aged 6-14 years, found an overall incidence of NE of 3.8%, which progressively decreased from 8.1% and 9.6% at 6 years old, in males and females respectively, to 1.2% at 13 years old [3].…”

“…Data from several studies show that NE can have far-reaching consequences on the individual, including effects on self-perception, with reduced self-esteem [5,6], interpersonal behaviour, sexual activity and quality of life [7]. Persistent bedwetting may compromise the relationship between parents and children, with parents feeling anxious, guilty and eventually experiencing loss of confidence in their parental skills, and children losing self confidence, having difficulties in making friends and under-achieving at school [2,8]. Enuresis can be dramatically distressing as age increases; adult enuretics report being reluctant to go on holidays or staying away overnight (33%), that bedwetting is a terrible experience (40%), that it has a major influence in their life (32%), and complicates their relationships (23%) [9].…”

“…A similar trend was also observed in enuretic normal children [26][27][28][29][30]. The effect of gender on the prevalence rate of NE was reported by 12 studies.…”

“…Boys were reported by 10 studies to have higher prevalence rate than girls [6,[9][10][11][12]15,16,[19][20][21], equal rates in both sexes was reported by one study [13] and one study reported a higher rate in females [17]. These findings are similar to those reported in normal children with NE [28,[30][31][32][33][34][35]. According to Bottomley et al [36] NE in normal children is twice more common in boys than girls up to the age of nine years, but thereafter there is no gender difference in prevalence [36].…”
