An ER-associated miRNA signature predicts prognosis in ER-positive breast cancer

Abstract: BackgroundBreast cancer patients with positive estrogen receptor (ER) have a better prognosis. However, no prognostic miRNA signature was reported in the ER-positive breast cancer. The aim of the study was to identify and assess the prognostic significance of a miRNA signature in ER-positive breast cancer.MethodsTwo cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset were used as training (n =596) and testing set (n =319). Differential expression profiling was identified in the training set. And the prognostic… Show more

“…To our knowledge, these miRNAs have not previously been reported in relation to HBV-associated liver disease. However, they were previously indicated as non-invasive biomarkers in gastric and breast cancers (39) (40) (41) . Specifically, Yan et al reported the down-regulation of miR-935 in gastric carcinoma tissue as compared to normal tissue samples as well as in gastric cell line carcinoma as compared to that of non-gastric cells (40) .…”

“…The relationship between the 13 miRNAs and clinical features revealed that miR-21 and miR-193b might be more closely associated with PC. However, a single miRNA is less sensitive and specific than a panel of miRNAs [ 18 , 20 ]. Thus, we developed a risk score by combination of the 13 miRNAs and found that the risk score could independently predict OS in PC patients.…”

“…MiRNAs could also participate in the development and progression of cancer by acting as tumor suppressors or onco-miRNAs. Recently, many studies explored the value of miRNAs as biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis or monitoring curative effect in various cancers [ 14 – 18 ]. The prognostic value of miRNAs in PC has been identified in some previous studies [ 19 ].…”

“…Based on the public data with large sample size, the prognostic value of miRNAs have been evaluated in other tumor types, including lung adenocarcinoma [ 36 ], gliomas [ 37 ], bladder cancer [ 38 ], pancreatic cancer [ 39 ], breast cancer [ 40 ], hepatocellular carcinoma [ 41 ], head and neck squamous cell carcinomas [ 42 , 43 ], cervical cancer [ 44 ], melanoma [ 45 ]. Except miR-326 which have been reported as a member of a seven-miRNA signature predicting survival in hepatocellular carcinoma, the other six miRNAs identified in our study have not been recommended as biomarkers with best prognostic value in other tumor types.…”
