An erosive/ulcerative alimentary disease of undetermined etiology in Swedish moose (AIces alces L.)

Abstract: During the years 1985 to 1987, 689 moose (Alces alces L.) collected throughout Sweden were necropsied at the National Veterinary Institute in Uppsala, Sweden. Sixty-eight of those investigated had catarrhal to hemorrhagic enteritis, atrophied lymphoid organs, and/or numerous erosive, uclerative, necrotizing lesions of the digestive mucosa. “…Cattle, especially, have shown a high susceptibility to copper deficiency (7 7, 23). The clinical signs in the cattle are closely similar to those observed in the moose disease (24,25,26,27). Thus, secondary copper deficiency, chromium deficiency and a disturbance of trace element metabolism have been suggested as the cause of the disease (22).…”

In earlier studies, vascular lesions like haemorrhages and blood vessel rupture have been described in Cu deficient cattle [ 45 ], piglets [ 32 , 6 , 50 ], chicken [ 39 ] and moose [ 41 ].…”
