An estimation of the incidence of squeaking and revision surgery for squeaking in ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacement

Abstract: Squeaking arising from a ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) total hip replacement (THR) may cause patient concern and in some cases causes patients to seek revision surgery. We performed a meta-analysis to determine the incidence of squeaking and the incidence of revision surgery for squeaking. A total of 43 studies including 16,828 CoC THR that reported squeaking, or revision for squeaking, were entered into the analysis. The incidence of squeaking was 4.2% and the incidence of revision for squeaking was 0.2%. The inci… Show more

“…In these patients, there was no difference in clinical scores and no revisions performed for squeaking. Our findings are similar to those of Owen et al [55] who performed a meta-analysis on 16,828 patients with ceramic bearings and found that while the incidence of squeaking was 4.2%, the incidence of revision for squeaking was 0.2%. There have been other reports with higher rates of reported squeaking [56].…”

“…There are also complications specific to some implants. Squeaking has been well documented in CoC components; however, specific risk factors remain in debate [27,42,48]. Ceramic liners can also fracture during surgical implantation, which leads to a wasted expensive implant [50].…”

“…It is an audible sound that emanates from the hip with movement [29]. It has been reported to have an incidence rate of 2.4%, 36% and 4.2% in different studies when Acolade femoral stems are excluded (a stem showing higher incidence of squeaking related to design) [29][30][31]. Squeaking is also recognized to take some time to manifest [29,30].…”

“…Squeaking is also recognized to take some time to manifest [29,30]. Although it has little clinical implication, the squeaking phenomenon is estimated to result in revision of CC bearings 0.2% of the time [31]. Several mechanisms have been described to explain squeaking [31].…”
