An ethic of indulgence? Alcohol, Ultimate Frisbee and calculated hedonism

Abstract: In this article, I use Featherstone's concept of calculated hedonism to analyse consumption of alcohol amongst Ultimate Frisbee players. Drawing on a multi-year ethnographic project, I examine Ultimate players' reasons for drinking and contextualize this drinking within Ultimate's broader lifestyle. This examination and contextualization contributes to a growing body of literature that goes beyond the dominant perspectives on sport-related drinking through its conceptualization of consumptive pleasures in the … Show more

“…Taken together, the literature suggests that there are social and cultural elements of sports participation, and being a member of a sporting group, which are associated with alcohol (Palmer, ). As such, researchers advocate for a focus on how these features of sport life interact to structure drinking among sportspeople (Crocket, ; Palmer, ).…”

“…In this conceptualisation, pleasure seeking remains confined by time, space and social situation (Measham 2004a;2004b;Szmigin et al 2008) and, in this sense, is neither irrational nor separate from cognitive processes. Sociological analysts of calculated hedonism have also argued that it reflects the turn to consumption as a way of performing pleasure and identity (Brain 2000;Crocket 2014;Featherstone 1982Featherstone , 2007. Measham and Brain's (2005) work, in particular, traces how the emergence of night-time economies --urban zones focused on alcohol consumption and other entertainment --has contributed to a new 'culture of intoxication'.…”

“…Measham and Brain's (2005) work, in particular, traces how the emergence of night-time economies --urban zones focused on alcohol consumption and other entertainment --has contributed to a new 'culture of intoxication'. However, as Crocket (2014) notes, discourses of neoliberalism that responsibilise individuals for problems such as excessive drinking have also become prevalent. These discourses have also influenced analyses of drinking, including the calculated hedonism approach, which position individuals as responsible for managing their own pleasures and risks.…”
