The Internet of Things brings new ways to collect privacy-sensitive data from billions of devices. Well-tailored distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) can provide high transaction processing capacities to IoT devices in a decentralized fashion. However, privacy aspects are often neglected or unsatisfying, with a focus mainly on performance and security. In this paper, we introduce decentralized usage control mechanisms to empower IoT devices to control the data they generate. Usage control defines obligations, i.e., actions to be fulfilled to be granted access, and conditions on the system in addition to data dissemination control. The originality of this paper is to consider the usage control system as a component of distributed ledger networks, instead of an external tool. With this integration, both technologies work in synergy, benefiting their privacy, security and performance. We evaluated the performance improvements of integration using the IOTA technology, particularly suitable due to the participation of small devices in the consensus. The results of the tests on a private network show an approximate 90% decrease of the time needed for the UCS to push a transaction and make its access decision in the integrated setting, regardless of the number of nodes in the network.

Benchmarking serves as the foundation for selecting a database in any project. The available benchmarking tools evaluate system performance by subjecting it to random data and a set of arbitrary operations, without considering the specific characteristics of the application. The problem with these tools is that they reflect unrealistic benchmarks as they do not consider the nature, sequence, and type of queries the application will send to the database. In this paper, we introduced the approach of benchmarking the database based on the nature of interaction and queries between the application and database, and we built a benchmarking tool using Java to benchmark Redis and MongoDB as databases for a trip planning application with GTFS data of Budapest local transport data. Our study involved comparing the performance of both databases under ten different stress levels by simulating the number of querying clients. The results show that both database's performance is slightly decreased while increasing the number of clients (stress). However, Redis shows better performance compared to MongoDB.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-enabled production facilities generate vast amounts of data, which, if harnessed effectively, can substantially enhance manufacturing efficiency through latency reduction. The selection of the appropriate data storage technology is a pivotal consideration in achieving this objective. While prior studies have examined SQL and NoSQL databases in terms of latency and energy efficiency, these evaluations have not been conducted specifically within the context of IIoT. This paper aims to fill this research gap by conducting a rigorous comparison of SQL and NoSQL databases, focusing on their performance latency and energy efficiency when interfaced with IoT nodes. By elucidating these relationships, our research offers actionable insights that can guide IIoT-enabled manufacturing facilities in optimizing their operations. Specifically, the paper aids in the selection of the most suitable database technology, thereby contributing to latency minimization and efficiency maximization in industrial settings.
