Natural disasters affect populations in various parts of the world. The impacts of disasters can cause many problems to the health of people and disruption to family life, potentially leading to an unexpected transition. The objective of this paper is to present the unexpected transitional experiences of rural families following a natural disaster. A multiple case study of six families was conducted with children and adolescents in a rural area affected by a 2008 disaster in southern Brazil. For data collection, we used participant observation, narrative interviews, genograms, ecomaps and an instrument called calendar routine. The analysis of the data resulted in different family interpretations about the changes resulting from the storm and compared life before and after the disaster. The loss of homes and loved ones, migration, unemployment, and losses from the farm were the main changes associated with new development tasks. The experiences of family transition after the disaster revealed that losses influenced social lives, daily routines and the preservation of cultural values.

BackgroundThis study aimed to analyse the injuries sustained by rescue workers in earthquake relief efforts in high altitude areas for improving the ways of how to effectively prevent the injuries.MethodsThe clinical data of 207 relief workers from four military hospitals in Tibet, who were injured in the Tibetan disaster areas of China during ‘4.25’ Nepal earthquake rescue period, was retrospectively analyzed. The demographic features, sites of injury and causes of injury were investigated.ResultsThe most frequently injured sites were the ankle-foot and hand-wrist (n = 61, 26.5 %), followed by injuries in leg-knee-calf (n = 22, 9.6 %), head-neck (4.87 %), thoracic and abdominal region (2.6 %) and lower back (3.9 %). The specific high-altitude environment increased the challenges associated with earthquake relief.DiscussionThe specific plateau environment and climate increased the burden and challenge in earthquake relief. The injury distribution data shown in this study demonstrated that effective organization and personnel protection can reduce the injury occurrences.ConclusionRelief workers were prone to suffering various injuries and diseases under specific high-altitude environment.

RESUMORelato de experiência sobre o planejamento dos abrigos temporários montados em São José do Rio Preto, na catástrofe de 11 de janeiro de 2011. Objetivou-se analisar o planejamento de um abrigo, a partir de princípios de assistência, utilizando-se documentos da Secretaria Nacional de Proteção e Defesa Civil. Foram escolhidas barracas Shelter Box para a abrigagem, com áreas de convívio. A infraestrutura de apoio possuía coleta de resíduos, abastecimento de água e de alimentos satisfatórios. Estava disponível equipe de profissionais de saúde. As ações de recuperação são complexas e devem estar articuladas e direcionadas ao interesse da população atingida, adaptando-se às mudanças necessárias. PALAVRAS-CHAVE
