An evaluation of metrics for assessing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs): A statewide comparison

Abstract: antibiotics for pharyngitis remain important sources of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. Expansion of the HEDIS performance measure for appropriate testing to include adults may promote more appropriate testing and treatment of pharyngitis in adults.

“…However, challenges with CAUTI SIR have been reported by other health systems. 2 Additionally, we did not compare CLABSI or CAUTI SIRs over time because historical comparisons of CAUTI rates can be misleading because of the definition changes over time. We were unable to include data from 2019 and 2020, but we found a similar paradoxical relationship between CAUTI SIR and SUR for DICON hospitals in 2017 (data not shown).…”

“…12 Going forward, we need to shift the focus from measuring "CAUTI events" to all types of catheter-related harm and refine our performance metrics so that our measurements reflect our efforts to improve patient outcomes. 2,10 We suggest further review of the CAUTI metric and removing or changing the weight of this metric in the HAC score. Focusing on metrics like device utilization, which reflect both process and outcome measurements, may incentivize more inclusive quality improvement efforts.…”

“…School health program was a crucial element of entire healthUrinary Tract Infection (UTI) is deemed the most common infection, accounting for millions of patient visits to the emergency department every year (Lough et al, 2019;Ozer et al, 2021). The most common nosocomial infection is catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI), with over a million cases in hospital and nursing home patients every year (Pepe et al, 2020). The risk of contracting CAUTI increases exponentially with the increase in catheterization duration (Letica-Kriegel et al, 2019).…”
