This paper proposes a distributed routing protocol that minimizes the energy consumption of communication networks. The proposed protocol, called PG 2 BR (Parameterized Green Gradient Based Routing) contains a dual process, which includes i) a two-phase mechanism that gradually powers devices on/off in a decentralized manner, depending on the traffic condition, and ii) a distributed gradient based routing that quickly adapts to topology changes while maximizing resource usage and maintaining QoS requirements. Simulation work on a number of different types of topologies, have shown that PG 2 BR is highly adaptive to any traffic and network conditions while proposing the best energy savings-QoS trade-off.
