An evaluation of patient attitudes to colonoscopy and the importance of endoscopist interaction and the endoscopy environment to satisfaction and value

Abstract: Patients undergoing colonoscopy highly prioritize aspects of care relating to the interaction with the endoscopist and the procedure itself. Environment factors are considered to be less important. These findings may assist in service redesign around patient-identified value within the patient pathway.

“…Consistent with previous research on important aspects of colonoscopy, 27 the memory of pain is an important aspect of EGD that shapes patients’ overall perception of the procedure. These two aspects of EGD—feelings of respect/disrespect and pain—were most salient in shaping memories of the peak experience of EGD and therefore potentially impact future adherence behaviors.…”

“…14 Nearly all patients value the technical skill of the operating endoscopist as a top priority, but there is a high amount of variability in expectations regarding management of discomfort, or even other items of importance such as privacy and same-sex endoscopist. 15 There exists a significant number of patients able to tolerate colonoscopy without the aid of any systemic sedation. [16][17][18] In previous studies, there has been some inconsistencies in the findings, such as the role and effect of gender, and prior use of certain medications such as benzodiazepines.…”
