An Evaluation of the Functioning of Cooling Systems in the Polish Coal Mine Industry

Abstract: Underground excavations in which an airflow is present are affected by both natural and technological sources of heat. As a result, the air flowing through the mine excavations is characterised by high temperatures, which—combined with high humidity—causes microclimatic conditions to deteriorate. Bad microclimatic conditions affect miners underground, causing a reduction of perception, concentration, attention, and perceptiveness. This negative influence of temperature and humidity on the human body is referre… Show more

“…As the configuration of underground mine workings are constantly changing the need to evacuate heat can occur locally, as a result, possibility of using spot cooling systems in order to evacuate heat are analysed further. A great variety of cooling systems are presented above [2][3][4][5][6][7] but the schematics of all can be resumed as in Fig. 1.…”

“…In most countries, mine legislation requires a certain underground working temperature. Poor microclimatic conditions affect miners, causing a reduction of perception, concentration, attention, and perceptiveness [3]. Mine cooling systems therefore forms an integral part of ensuring safe underground working conditions.…”

“…Wang et al [15] established a local cooling system based on a water source heat pump; solved the problems of water supply, heat removal, and the cooling of the local cooling system; reduced the investment and operating costs; and improved the refrigeration efficiency. Nikodem et al [16] investigated the actual air cooling efficiency through research on air cooling devices of six hard coal mines, and the results obtained allowed a more accurate identification of the factors that reduced the efficiency of the cooling system of the mining plant under analysis. Although the current literature is relatively comprehensive, there is still a lack of detailed discussion on the factors affecting the cooling effect of cooling systems.…”
