An evaluation of the SAGE III version 4 aerosol extinction coefficient and water vapor data products

Abstract: Abstract. Herein, we provide an assessment of the data quality of Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE III) Version 4 aerosol extinction coefficient and water vapor data products. The evaluation is based on comparisons with data from four instruments: SAGE II, the Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement (POAM III), the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE), and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS). Since only about half of the SAGE III channels have a direct comparison with measurements by other instruments… Show more

“…It should be noted that the aerosol data at 386 nm are biased low below 20 km and above the main aerosol layer and are at best of limited quality under all conditions and altitudes. Following Thomason et al (2010), while the data is included in the data set, we 35 recommend caution using SAGE II 386-nm data. Finally, we exclude any data below the highest altitude at which 1020 nm aerosol extinction coefficient exceeds 0.01 km -1 because of potential artifacts in SAGE II data at altitudes where the atmosphere is essentially opaque.…”

“…In version 6.2, they were derived from the Shettle and Anderson cross-section compilation (Shettle and Anderson, 1995), which is the same cross-section compilation that was used in SAGE III version 3.0. In SAGE III version 4.0 (Thomason et al, 2010), however, the O 3 crosssections were updated to the Bogumil (Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) V3) cross-sections (Bogumil et al, 2003), which had a positive impact on several data products and produced better agreement with in-atmosphere measurements (Pitts et al, 2006). As such, SAGE II version 7.0 uses the SCIAMACHY V3 O 3 cross-sections, including companion measurements of NO 2 absorption cross-sections encompassing SAGE II measurement wavelengths (Fig.…”

“…SAGE III was launched on the Meteor 3M platform into a polar orbit, performing occultations in the mid-to polar latitudes. With an accuracy and precision of the order of 10 %, and a channel at 755 nm, SAGE III provides an excellent data set for comparison (Thomason et al, 2010). Bourassa et al (2012) compared the version 5.07 algorithm with coincident SAGE III measurements using a coincident criterion of ±6 h, ±1 • latitude and ±2.5 • longitude.…”
