“…To improve overall accuracy and consistency, the cytology slides were examined in one batch by two pathologists (one an oral and maxillofacial pathologist and the other senior cyto‐ and histopathologist) with the knowledge of the clinical history but stringently blinded to the histopathology. Both pathologists were calibrated on their recently proposed and slightly modified oral cytologic grading and scoring system (Tables and ) while examining the diagnostic research material and reaching a consensus . As the emphasis of clinical management is the detection and treatment of high‐grade disease, the authors felt that it would be wise to include high‐grade dysplasia with invasive SCC in one category (Table , Category E).…”

“…Incision biopsy is a highly reliable examination method for obtaining a definite diagnosis of oral mucosal lesions, but it is invasive. In comparison, EC is a quick and simple procedure, and relatively noninvasive, allowing cells to be collected over a wider area than selective tissue biopsy (22). Thus, we consider that the use of EC samples for detecting both Candida species infection and screening of oral malignancies is a superior method for diagnosis.…”

“…A cytobrush is employed for sample collection, as it permits easy sampling and ensures the quality of the sample (21). In addition, EC allows harvesting of cells over a wider area than selective tissue biopsy (22).…”
