An Exact Matrix Representation of Maxwell's Equations

Abstract: Matrix representations of Maxwell's equations are very well-known. This is evident from the numerous studies on the close resemblance between the Maxwell equations in spinor form to the Dirac equation. However, all these matrix representations lack an exactness, as they assume the media to be homogeneous or/and time-independent. Moreover the final representation is given in terms of a pair of matrix equations. We present a matrix representation of Maxwell's equations in an inhomogeneous linear medium, in prese… Show more

“…Contrary to what one might have expected, the symmetric structure of an enclosed hydronium H 3 O + cation inside a cage of water molecules is not the most stable structure of H + (H 2 O) 21 . Instead, calculations show that the cluster favors a surface-protonated cage with a neutral water in the center, [47][48][49] which is conrmed experimentally. 50 Such a structure was used as a starting point for sampling initial conditions for the molecular dynamics calculations.…”

“…It is very natural to look for a prescription based fully on the Maxwell's equations. The starting point for such a prescription is the exact matrix representation of the Maxwell's equations, taking into account the spatial and temporal variations of the permittivity and permeability [32]. The derived representation using 8 Â 8 matrices has a close algebraic analogy with the Dirac equation, enabling the use of the rich machinery of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transform.…”
